Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several conversations following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, Australia require four wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
