World Health Organization Raises Alert Over Acute Scarcity of Obesity Medications

With over a billion individuals worldwide now classified as obese, it is urging increased and just access to these injectable treatments.

Per forecasts, in excess of 2,000,000,000 could be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our latest guidance affirms that obesity is a long-term condition that can be addressed with thorough and continuous support," stated the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, constrained manufacturing, and logistical bottlenecks are key barriers to widespread availability to the jabs that can help people shift substantial weight, says the agency.

Individuals typically start to lose weight after several weeks of commencing the weekly injections.

Research points to patients may put most of the weight back on after a year of halting the treatment, when their typical appetite return.

Being above a healthy weight increases your likelihood for contracting health problems, such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and some malignancies.

Obesity concerns people in all nations and was associated with 3.7 million deaths worldwide in 2024, per the WHO.
