The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a major awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a demand for the addition fresh award types to honor unsung work and delight the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include many game types, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles in the world and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
