The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a dare for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but within Together lies a deep meditation about how we choose to love each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building fright fest, interspersing bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. Deep down, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
