Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise
Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users using these medications must be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team point out that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Doctors believe the way of the jabs explains the heightened weight return.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.
"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
