European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
